Husbandry Training

What is Husbandry Training?

Husbandry training originated from dolphin treatment and is now widely used in zoos. Zoo animals are often large, and it’s not easy to physically restrain them with human strength. Previously, chemical restraint with anesthesia or mechanical restraint was used, but this posed stress and danger to both the animals and humans.

By using husbandry training, which is based on applied behavior analysis, it became possible to restrain animals behaviorally, in a way that prioritizes animal welfare without causing pain.

For example, a tiger can be trained to voluntarily extend its paw through the bars of its cage and remain still for a blood draw without the need for anesthesia or mechanical restraint.

When applied to dogs, husbandry training makes them more cooperative during veterinary treatments, nail clipping, administering medication, tooth brushing, grooming, ear cleaning, and trimming, eliminating the need to forcefully restrain them.

Isn’t it great to be able to perform medical and caregiving tasks without causing stress to the dog? For instance, we can help a dog accept tooth brushing without resistance and ensure we clean every corner thoroughly.

Fees: 24,000 yen (4 sessions)  (40min  per session)

Once your dog masters "stationing" (step 1, where the dog signals readiness), the training moves on to touch and tooth brushing. Depending on the individual dog, it might take more than 4 sessions to fully accept tooth brushing.
